Wooden ship models
When I lived in Hamburg in the beginning of 80s, I saw in shop window wooden ship models that looked really good. But - they were too expencive for me. I was told, that I perhaps could build something myself. So I went to Spiezeug-Rasch and bought a wooden kit to learn building methods. After some time I had read lot of books and tryed to get sketches from maritime museums and equipment needed from specialised shops. There are not many of those shops left. Now, after several years of learning I am able to make myself planks, ropes and many other things like special tools I need.
Here is a model of oldest known church model in the world, The Mataro Model from 15th century. Originally it was situated in a small chapel of village called Mataro east of Barcelona. Likely it was a votive ship, not only a decoration as many ship models in modern time churches are. After an adventurous history (from Spain via America to Netherlands) original is now to be seen in the Maritime Museum of Rotterdam. I found sketches in Maritime Museum of Barcelona. I also visited Maritime Museum of Rotterdam several times and found more details. My model from year 2002 is made in scale 1:3 of the original Mataro model.
